Jon Mansfield's match report:
Another away win during our pre-season campaign, against lowly Bury Town, Two first half goals killed the game, Michael Kyd powering through the defence holding off two defenders to score form eight yards on about 7 minutes, the second a cross came from the left, a Bury defender side footed what looked like a certain own goal, only for the home keeper to get a hand to keep it out, but the rebound fell to Martin Butler (I think!) who drove home from eight yards at a very accute angle. The third came mid way through the second half when Davey Williamson capped a great performance with a neat turn to score with a low drive into the corner. Bury themselves showed very little, if only the team had as much enthusiasm as their fans with their drum and fire crackers ( It was just like being away to Barcelona, Not)
Team was changing frequently but consisted of fringe first team players, including Matty Joseph during the first half, a no Scott Barrett, Sean Marshall was between the sticks. Lots of new trialists and no team selection given over the tannoy means its difficult to give a full team listing, I think I'll leave that to the CEN.
Fred Berry's match report:
We fielded a team of youngsters and trialists and easily won against very poor opposition. The signs were encouraging from lots of players. Davey Williamson had a tremendous game which was capped with a well taken goal.
We put Bury town under pressure from the start, Kyd burst through the defence but his low shot was wide. Bury were not good. They could not pass and resorted to useless long balls and shots from nowhere. On 5? minutes Kyd did score. I was getting other peoples' burgers so did not see the goal but apparently Kyd burst through the defence to find himself against the keeper, he slotted a low shot past him into the bottom corner 1-0. The player we have on trial from Everton played at no. 2 (well I hope it was him) he had a very good game and looks like a useful player, lets hope we can sign him.
Anyway, we were soon two goals up. A left wing cross came in from Hayes, the defender looked like he was going to clear it with the keeper screaming at him, but instead he sliced his clearence back, the keeper pulled off a superb reaction save diving low to just get the ball away, Martin Butler reacted quickest and slammed in a well taken goal 2-0. We were certainly having lots of chances, Hayes missed two shots which he should of scored and he was putting in some good crosses. We were caught offside one too many times.
It was more of the same in the second half, United dominating. Their keeper could not speak properly let alone shout. Williamson was everywere, he was somewhere in every move. He and Butler linked up well. Butler scored but the goal was ruled out for a infringement, which was perhaps a little harsh. Williamson finally got his goal on the 70? min. A good ball found him in space in the penalty area, he turned and delivered a half volley into the bottom corner. On the whole a good team performance and some encouraging signs. MOM Davey Williamson. (ratings coming once I have list of full team in CEN.)
Many thanks to Jon and Fred for their match reports. The scorer of the second goal was officially Adam Wilde.
